Food activists come from all walks of life, but there is generally one common theme among all of us: a frustration with the current food system.
Always passionate about music, Courtney Swan started her career as a tour manager for popular bands like Tove Lo, Third Eye Blind and 3OH!3. But after getting more into nutrition in her 20s, she realized how tough it was for her and her bands to eat well on the road.
Soon, Courtney started adjusting their food riders and stocking their tour buses with organic food and green juices, combining her passion for nutrition with her passion for music. On a mission to continue helping people, Courtney also has built quite the following on social media, where she posts about real food and the organic movement, most notably on her widely followed Instagram account.
Recently, Courtney gave me an inside look at her healthy, on-the-go lifestyle:
EAT: Mexican food. I could eat it everyday for the rest of my life and be happy. It can be healthy if you get it from the right place or make it at home. My go-to places are Gracias Madre in LA and La Cocina in Telluride, CO. I also genuinely love a good salad – it’s all about the toppings and dressing.
DRINK: Cold-brew coffee in the morning, green juice (cucumber, celery, kale, parsley, ginger & lemon) in the afternoon & organic red wine in the evening!
SWEAT: I love to stay active and get some sort of exercise in every day. If I’m not going to a workout class, then I’m running on the treadmill or doing a workout from Kayla Itsines’ e-book. You can do them anywhere, so they’re perfect for when I’m traveling. When I’m home in Nashville, I love to go to my gym GetFit615 for high intensity workouts. The owner/trainer is an amazing person who makes the workouts really fun.
READ: My all time favorite books are the Harry Potter series. I’m also a huge fan of Michael Pollan; his book In Defense of Food changed my life and is what sparked my interest in health and food politics. Unfortunately, at the moment, the only books I have time to read are my nutrition textbooks! (I’m getting my masters in nutrition right now.)
LISTEN: Drake, Ellie Goulding, Saves the Day & Sigur Ros are my favorites. I’m also on a podcast kick at the moment. My favorite is Lewis Howes’ The School of Greatness. Talk about an inspiring person.
WATCH: I love a variety of shows: Seinfeld, How I Met Your Mother, Inside Amy Schumer, Parks & Recreation, The Office, Scandal & Broad City are favorites. I also love to watch food documentaries. Some favorites: Forks Over Knives, Fed Up, GMO OMG, Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead and Hungry for Change.
PLACES: Telluride, CO is my favorite place to be. It’s not only home, but it’s one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. I also love Europe, especially London, and I am obsessed with Amsterdam. Not for the “typical” reasons people go there. I just think the city is beautiful and love the vibe there. They also have a lot of juice bars!
RITUALS: I like to drink lemon water before coffee in the morning and love getting my daily workout in. I’m also trying to get in the habit of meditating every day.
DREAMS: I want to change the way America eats, and I want to reach as many people as I can with my message: Eat Real Food.
WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME: I spent half of my childhood growing up in Telluride, CO and started snowboarding at a really young age. I actually did undergrad at the University of Colorado at Boulder because I used to want to be a pro snowboarder!
